Nurse Intern Program Packet
Philosophy
The staff of Memorial Hospital believes that to best retain new nurses in the profession is to provide a sheltered environment. The novice nurse needs assistance coping with reality shock, developing competence with technical skills, and adapting to the new role. The intern program provides a one-on-one relationship between an experienced preceptor and an intern that promotes the best environment for learning, support, and growth.
Overview
The nurse internship is a three-month practicum available to the new graduate of an accredited Registered Nursing program that has less than six months of experience and is eligible to take the NCLEX. The program is designed to be flexible enough to offer the intern the opportunity to develop and demonstrate their potential for assuming clinical leadership responsibility in nursing practice. The intern will complete general hospital orientation and nursing orientation in the Professional Development department.
Objectives
1. To develop and retain registered nurses that can deliver high-quality care.
2. To assist in the transition of graduate nurses to registered nurses by providing a flexible program to meet the individual needs of the intern.
3. To assist the novice nurse in developing leadership skills and technical skills necessary to provide excellent patient care.
4. To provide awareness of the functions and objectives of other departments and how they relate to the unit.
