Together, we are shaping the future of healthcare in Biloxi and beyond—ensuring that every patient receives the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
Hospital services in Biloxi began in 1903, when Methodist missionary Minnie Boykin provided care in her home for those in need. In 1908, Dr. H.M. Folkes and local residents established the Biloxi Charity Association, operating a 12-bed sanitarium on West Beach. As the community grew, Harry T. Howard donated his summer home in 1919 to expand care for both paying and charity patients. With community support, the facility evolved into a full-service hospital, including a nursing home.
By 1928, a three-story hospital was built on the Howard property, increasing capacity to 60 beds, later expanding to 100. In 1963, Howard Memorial Hospital was built on Lafayette Street overlooking Back Bay, expanding to 200 beds by 1975. Over the next two decades, the hospital underwent several transitions, including management by the Sisters of St. Francis and the establishment of a nursing home and behavioral health center. In 1981, it became Biloxi Regional Medical Center, and by 1986, a new state-of-the-art facility opened in downtown Biloxi at 150 Reynoir Street.
Today, this facility, formerly Merit Health Biloxi and now part of Memorial Health System, Memorial Hospital Biloxi continues its legacy of compassionate care, expanding access to specialized services and expert providers across the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
