Memorial Surgeons Admitted to the Fellow American College of Surgeons

Husband and wife surgeons, Dr. Walter Surowiec, Memorial Cardiothoracic Surgeon, and Dr. Kristine Carter, Memorial General Surgeon, recently became Fellows of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).

To obtain Fellow status, candidates must fulfill multiple requirements, including education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct. Surgeons must pass a rigorous evaluation and they must meet the high standards established and demanded by the College.

Dr. Surowiec received his doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the University of North Texas, Health Science Center in Fort Worth. He completed his residency in general surgery at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. He completed fellowships in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery and vascular surgery at the Carolinas Heart Institute in Charlotte, N.C. Prior to working at Memorial Hospital, he was with the LSU Health Science Center in Shreveport. Dr. Surowiec is Board Certified in General, Thoracic, and Vascular Surgery.

Dr. Carter received her bachelor’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and completed her medical degree at LSU in Shreveport. Her general surgery residency was completed at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. She is a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery and is Board Certified in General Surgery.

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to improve the quality of care for the surgical patient by setting high standards for surgical education and practice.
