Living Well With Diabetes

When Calvin was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, he never expected it to disrupt his life the way it did. But after a hospital stay last December for pneumonia, he learned that his blood sugar levels were dangerously high. His blood sugar was a shocking 588, and his life was about to change.

A Surprising Diagnosis

Before the hospital visit, Calvin had noticed some unusual symptoms. “I was waking up every 5 minutes to use the bathroom, but I didn’t realize it was diabetes,” he said. This was the wake-up call that made him take his health seriously.

Support From Memorial Health System

Overwhelmed and unsure of what to do, Calvin was referred to Memorial Health System’s Diabetes Education Program Coordinator Falon Sisson, CFNP, after he was discharged. “She really helped me get the ball rolling,” Calvin explained. “I was completely lost and didn’t know which way to turn. She got me back to living normally.”

changes that would improve his quality of life. He still calls her with questions, and she’s always quick to help.

Lifestyle Changes and Technology

One of the most significant changes Calvin made was adjusting his diet. While he lost 30 pounds at first, he has since gained back a little weight, but he’s still eating healthier. “I stick to fish, chicken, and watch out for junk food,” he said. “It’s hard, but I’m getting used to it.”

Technology has also played a key role in managing his diabetes. Calvin uses a Dexcom G7 sensor, a small patch that monitors his blood sugar levels and sends alerts to his phone when his levels are too high or low. “It’s been a big help,” he shared.

The Importance of Education

Calvin’s advice for others dealing with diabetes is clear: “If you’re serious about your health, you should definitely consider the program. You can have all the support in the world, but you have to be willing to help yourself, too.”
