From a Sore to Stage 4 – Michael’s Head and Neck Cancer Story
Michael describes himself as a “busy, physically active, and optimistic person” and someone who always sees the bright side of things. When a small spot underneath his tongue wouldn’t go away, he knew something wasn’t right. At 57 years old, he never expected that this persistent sore would be the first sign of Stage 4 Head and Neck Cancer.
A Long Road to Diagnosis
“I went to the dentist to have it biopsied, and the spot turned out to be cancer.” After meeting with multiple oral surgeons and following a procedure to have it removed, he was told that the spot was superficial and that the cancer was gone. He continues, “But a year later, I was feeling my neck, and I had a lump right underneath the left side of my jaw.”
After meeting with ENTs to determine what the cause of the lump could be and completing rounds of antibiotics with no changes, he went through a series of diagnostic tests to find an answer. He waited for several months to get results, and in that time, he sought a second opinion in another state. He had a successful surgery to remove the tumor in his jaw. As part of his treatment plan, he began chemotherapy and radiation at Memorial Cancer Center.
Michael completed the treatments, but through a PET scan, he then found out the cancer had spread to his lungs and right shoulder. After receiving the results from his biopsy, performed at another facility, Michael was asked where he wanted to receive his treatments. He didn’t hesitate to say that he wanted his treatments at Memorial Cancer Center again.
Dedicated Care Team
Michael’s care team at Memorial worked hand-in-hand with his team at the other facility, ensuring his treatment plan was followed strictly. “I think that right there saved my life.” Part of his care team at Memorial was Oncologist Dr. Sidra Khalid. “She has been a joy to meet with. A very good physician with an even better personality.”
Reflecting on his larger care team, he shares, “The people in infusion, radiology, and oncology are just incredible people. I love them all. They’ll always have a special place in my heart. The nurses who treated me, doctors and radiation oncologists, were incredible.” He adds, “You can get great cancer care right here.”
Staying Motivated Through Treatment
Treatment for head and neck cancer can be intensive, often involving surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. While the process wasn’t easy, Michael remained committed to fighting for his health.
“When I was going through chemo, I’d walk around and I’d talk to people. People would ask me what I did to stay motivated and positive. For me, it was all about nutrition and exercise. If you are working, continue to work. Stay busy if you are retired. Find a nutritionist who has knowledge of the effects of food and cancer. Care Oncology will provide supportive medicine that enhances the effects of the chemo. Call them on day one. You lose control of your life at the beginning of your treatment. You can’t just succumb, you have to fight it.”
One of the most important lessons he learned throughout his journey was the value of early detection and persistence. He encourages others facing a similar diagnosis to lean on their care team and support system.
His journey serves as a testament to the power of listening to your body, seeking answers, and trusting in the care and expertise of medical professionals.
