Perimenopause & Menopause
As a woman, when you reach your 40s (but sometimes your 30s and earlier) your body goes through a transitional period called perimenopause, when it starts producing less estrogen. It is still possible for you to become pregnant during this phase in your life. Perimenopause can produce a number of conditions:
- Irregular periods
- Vaginal dryness and bladder problems
- Changes in sexual arousal or desire
- Decreasing fertility
- Changing cholesterol levels
- Hot flashes, cold flashes, and night sweats
- Sleep problems
- Mood changes
- Weight gain and slowed metabolism
- Thinning hair and dry skin
- Loss of breast fullness
Treatments for perimenopause and menopause are based on relieving your signs and symptoms, as well as managing chronic conditions that may result, rather than medical procedures.
They may include:
- Hormone (estrogen) therapy
- Vaginal estrogen
- Low-dose antidepressants
- Gabapentin (Gralise, Horizant, Neurontin)
- Clonidine (Catapres, Kapvay)
- Medications to prevent or treat osteoporosis
Free Screenings
The Mississippi Department of Health is offering free breast and cervical screenings for eligible women.
