Exceptional Care That Transforms.

A Mother’s Courage, Our Team’s Compassion

Desiree’s pregnancy began like any other, full of hope, anticipation, and dreams for the little girl she would soon meet. But early on, she sensed something wasn’t right. She started experiencing bleeding, and fear began to creep into what should have been a joyful time.

She shares, “Early in my pregnancy, I began experiencing concerning bleeding episodes. OB-GYN Dr. Alisha Ware consistently took my concerns seriously and remained diligent in monitoring my condition.”

Through that vigilance, Desiree learned she had complete placenta previa and placenta percreta, which can be a dangerous combination and threaten the lives of both mother and baby. Her care quickly expanded to include Dr. Ware, Laborist Dr. Eniola Fagbongbe, the Memorial Obstetrics Emergency Department team, Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists, and eventually, a team highly specialized to care for her condition.

A Sudden Emergency

At 27 weeks, the unimaginable happened.

“My uterus ruptured unexpectedly, creating a life‑threatening emergency for both myself and my daughter.”

In those critical moments, speed and coordination made all the difference, and one quiet but powerful safeguard was already in place: Memorial’s 24/7 laborist program. These dedicated, board certified obstetricians are on site around the clock – day, night, weekends, and holidays – so patients are never without immediate, experienced care. Labor is unpredictable, and complications like Desiree’s can arise in an instant. Having a laborist physically present ensures that emergencies are met with swift action and that every expectant mother receives continuous, attentive care, even if her personal physician cannot be there at that exact moment. In Desiree’s case, that readiness made all the difference.

“Dr. Fagbongbe acted quickly during the rupture, and the coordination between providers helped ensure I was stabilized and transported immediately.”

Living With Fear and Uncertainty

Before the rupture, daily life had already become a delicate balance of hope and fear.

“My pregnancy quickly became medically complex and emotionally overwhelming. The uncertainty created a constant sense of fear and instability.”

As a nurse, Desiree understood the medical risks more deeply than most.

“Much of my daily life became centered around monitoring symptoms, attending appointments, and navigating the uncertainty of what could happen next while still trying to remain hopeful for my daughter.”

The Team That Carried Her Through

What Desiree remembers most is not just medical expertise, but compassion.

“What stood out most to me was how seriously my concerns were taken and how closely the teams worked together to protect both myself and my daughter.”

She saw the behind‑the‑scenes coordination, the urgency, the communication, and the humanity.

One person in particular left a lasting imprint: Labor & Delivery Charge Nurse Stephanie Perona.

“Her support, presence, and leadership during such a frightening time brought a sense of calm and reassurance that meant more than words can express.”

Even the smallest gestures mattered.

“Thoughtful explanations, reassurance during difficult conversations, and emotional support made an enormous difference during one of the hardest seasons of our lives.”

Healing, One Step at a Time

“Recovery has been both physical and emotional…life looks very different than we expected, but we are incredibly grateful to be here together as a family.”

Much of her strength now goes toward caring for her daughter, who has undergone multiple open-heart surgeries.

Looking Forward

“This experience profoundly changed the way I view healthcare, not only as a nurse, but as a patient and mother. I’ve seen firsthand how clinical excellence saves lives, but I’ve also learned healing often happens in the spaces around medicine: community support, encouragement, advocacy, and organizations willing to walk beside families during unimaginable seasons.

Alora Grace on her first birthday

Our focus remains on supporting Alora Grace’s growth, recovery, and joy in childhood. At the same time, I hope to continue healing physically and emotionally while using our story to encourage other families facing complex medical journeys.

One unexpected source of encouragement came through organizations dedicated to supporting children and families facing medical hardship. During seasons that felt heavy with uncertainty, reminders that communities care – and that help exists – mattered deeply.

Moving forward, I hope people reflect on the strength within their own communities and the organizations quietly supporting families during crisis. Whether through encouragement, advocacy, volunteering, awareness, or financial support, small acts of kindness often carry families farther than people realize.

If our story resonates with you, I encourage you to consider supporting organizations that help walk alongside families navigating complex medical journeys. Even something as simple as learning more, sharing awareness, or showing support can make a meaningful difference.

I’ve learned healing rarely happens alone. Often, it is carried by nurses, physicians, family, faith, and complete strangers choosing to show up.

If our journey reminds even one family they are not alone, or inspires one person to support children facing difficult medical battles, then sharing our story is worth it.”
