GULFPORT, Miss. – April 14, 2025 – Stephen Simpson was appointed by the Harrison County Board of Supervisors to serve on the Memorial Health System Board of Trustees effective Monday, April 14, 2025.

Mr. Simpson is a long-time resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and brings more than 30 years of legal and public service experience to the Board. He has practiced law since graduating from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1988, representing plaintiffs and defendants in civil and criminal matters, including personal injury, insurance, and governmental cases. He also served as an Assistant District Attorney and later as a Circuit Court Judge in the Second Circuit Court District of Mississippi, presiding over hundreds of civil and felony cases.

In 2008, Mr. Simpson was appointed Commissioner of the Mississippi Department of Public Safety by the Governor, where he oversaw agencies such as the Mississippi Highway Patrol, Bureau of Narcotics, Crime Lab, Medical Examiner, and Homeland Security. Since 2012, he has been in private practice, focusing on civil litigation and conducting court-ordered mediations. He holds multiple mediation certifications and is registered with the Mississippi State Bar Registry of Mediators.

Mr. Simpson has served in numerous professional organizations, including the Mississippi State Bar, the ABA, and the Mississippi Prosecutors Association. He is a past president of the Mississippi Conference of Circuit Court Judges and a former chair of the American Inns of Court local chapter. In 2018, he was named to The Best Lawyers in America.

Memorial is a not-for-profit medical complex jointly owned by the City of Gulfport and Harrison County. The Board of Trustees is comprised of seven (7) Trustees, three (3) of which are named by the City of Gulfport; three (3) by the Board of Supervisors of Harrison County, Mississippi; and one (1) named jointly by Harrison County and the City of Gulfport.
