Robyn’s Breast Cancer Journey and the Power of Support
When Robyn discovered a small lump in her breast, she knew something was off. Diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer in 2021, Robyn’s journey is a testament to resilience, trust, and the unwavering support of her healthcare team.
An Unexpected Diagnosis
Robyn recalls how quickly things moved after she found the lump. “I found a little lump and that’s how it all started. I went to Dr. Gaddy’s office, and everything happened really fast. They sent me for a mammogram, then a biopsy, and before I knew it, I was at Memorial,” she shared.
From that moment, Robyn knew she wanted Memorial to be at the heart of her care. “I told them I wanted Memorial when they told me it was definitely cancer,” she said. “Dr. Mace was the first person I saw, and he did the surgery. Then my husband picked Dr. Wall for my follow-up care.”
Overcoming Financial Worries
Like many, Robyn faced not only the fear of a cancer diagnosis but also the stress of financial uncertainty. “When it first started, I didn’t have any insurance and had no idea how I was going to pay for anything,” Robyn explained. “But that’s when Paula, my Nurse Navigator, got involved. She guided me every step of the way and connected me with Phyllis, my financial advisor.”
Robyn’s gratitude for the team at Memorial is palpable. “I told my husband if we win the lottery, I want to give the money to Memorial Hospital. Not once did anyone ever say to me, ‘Robyn, you don’t have insurance, so you’re on your own.’ They just wanted me to focus on getting healthy. I’m crying sitting here telling you this.”
Paula, Memorial’s Nurse Navigator, played a vital role in Robyn’s journey. “Paula would check on me during chemo treatments and call me regularly to see how I was doing. She was always there for me. I don’t know what I would have done without her.”
Heartfelt Gratitude
Robyn’s appreciation for Memorial and its staff goes beyond words, but she expressed her gratitude in a letter to the hospital:
“In 2021, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and was unprepared and overwhelmed. From the very beginning, Paula, my Nurse Navigator, told me not to worry. I had no insurance and no idea how I was going to pay for any of my medical treatment. She said focus on getting well, and that the team would help me along my journey. I am so very grateful to all the support and love that was given to me.”
She went on to praise the doctors and staff who made her experience at Memorial so positive:
“Dr. Mace and his staff did the surgery, and then I went into Dr. Wall’s care. Each and every person my husband and I have met along the way has been amazing. The chemo team carry smiles on their faces, even when they see so much pain and sorrow, they give hope and encouragement. Dr. Wall never lets you leave without a bear hug and a huge smile. Phyllis, my financial advisor, has always been supportive and caring. I cannot express in words my sincere gratitude.”
Moving Forward with Confidence
Robyn completed her last chemo treatment in July 2022 but continues to be monitored closely. “Dr. Wall sees me every four months, and I don’t leave without that bear hug and huge smile. She’s not letting me go, and I’m so thankful for that,” she shared.
Her message to others facing a similar journey is one of perseverance: “Just take care of your body. Don’t worry about the money—you’ll figure it out down the road.”
