Celebrating Black History Month – Calvin Williams

This year, Memorial is celebrating Black History Month by spotlighting members of our team who embody our mission of healing, inspiring, and transforming the health of our community.

Calvin Williams

Calvin has been part of the Memorial team for more than 24 years, and he currently serves as our Security Services Day Shift Lieutenant. In this role, his responsibilities include managing the department payroll, processing incident reports, supervising nine patrol officers and speaking at onboarding for new hire orientation. Calvin is also a member of the Workplace Violence Committee and a Service Excellence representative for Security Services.

He was nominated by a Memorial team member, who wrote, “Calvin is the ultimate professional and has the most calming, pleasant demeanor. He is very thorough and is an integral part of orienting new Memorial team members to the organization. Any encounter with him is always pleasant, regardless of the situation or the person. Simply by being himself, Calvin inspires those around him to represent Memorial in a professional manner. He embodies the W.E.C.A.R.E. standard and serves as a good role model for others to follow.”

A passion for helping

Calvin shares, “I enjoy assisting employees, patients and visitors with wayfinding. I also enjoy the assorted challenges that come from working for a public healthcare facility as large as Memorial.” It’s common to find Calvin helping patients and visitors get to their destinations on campus.

Inspired by strong leadership

When asked about an inspirational Black historical figure who has had an impact on him, Calvin says, “Coach William ‘Prince’ Jones inspired me to reach higher by providing strong leadership and direction. He was elected to the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame and the City of Gulfport’s Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame. He also coached Olympic Gold medalist Brittney Reese. Coach Jones is an educator, a coach, a husband and a father. He is a great role model and leader of young men.”

Calvin adds, “I celebrate Black History Month every single day by walking the path that others laid before me with gratitude, respect and with excellence.”

Thank you for sharing your story, Calvin, and thank you for all that you do for our patients and community!
