Exceptional Care That Transforms.

Meet Memorial’s Social Workers

social work team

March is Social Work Month, a time to spotlight the contributions social workers have made to our nation, community, and Memorial Health System. The theme for 2022 is “The Time is Right for Social Work”, highlighting how social workers have enriched our society for more than a century and how their services continue to be needed today.

Learn about the important roles they play from one of Memorial’s social workers, Wayne Cullinan, LMSW.

Every March, we celebrate the social work profession, and this year’s theme is “The Time Is Right For Social Work”. I don’t think that I remember a theme more true.

We work with amazing, conscientious, caring, concerned professionals every day at Memorial. As Social Workers, we work among the best physicians, nurses, technologists, technicians, clinicians, and providers in the region. We are part of nearly every team at Memorial. We are in the Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, the ICUs, the medical floors, and more.

When patients or families need connections, those connections typically come from social workers. It may be a social worker who is helping someone navigate who to call after a loved one passes away, connecting a patient to the funds to buy medication they couldn’t afford, or purchasing a car seat for a patient’s new baby.

Sometimes we connect patients with agencies to protect them like Child Protective Services or The Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence. Sometimes we connect patients to treatment for substance abuse or psychiatry, which aren’t always easy to find. Today, more than ever, our community needs these connections and that is why the time is right for social work.

Social Work is an invaluable part of our mission at Memorial Health System. As we seek to provide healthcare that transforms, social workers will continue to help the community at large with the services and the resources available through Memorial. Happy Social Work Month to all of my colleagues!
