Exceptional Care That Transforms.

Woodland Village Nursing Center Blog, July 2020 – Letter from the Administrator

Caregiver, Your Health Matters Too

If you’re a devoted caregiver to a loved one, you automatically fall into the admirable category as one who practices the art of self-sacrifice. Whether caring for a child with special needs or an aging parent, chances are the multiple responsibilities you balance on a daily basis do not allow much time for your personal needs to be at the top of your to-do list.

The reality of being a caregiver means there are good days and bad days. There are days when being overwhelmed with everything that needs to get done can be stressful, but there also are days when seeing a beautiful smile on your loved one’s face because of your selfless care makes the job so rewarding.

Learning to balance the highs and lows, while also taking care of yourself at the same time, is not easy to do, but it’s essential. In fact, many caregivers will often neglect their own health and put the health of their loved one first.

However, think about this example: If you have ever flown on a plane, one of the key safety instructions given by the attendant before take-off is to put your oxygen mask on first so that you may be able to effectively help others around you in the event something happens.

If your physical, emotional and mental health is starting to deteriorate due to the stress of caregiving, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Staying on top of your medical checkups, exercising regularly, getting proper rest and nutrition, and taking time off without feeling guilty are very important.

At Memorial Woodland Village Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, we understand the responsibilities you shoulder and are here to help.
