Exceptional Care That Transforms.

Memorial Hospital at Gulfport Leads in Advanced Surgical Technologies

A steadfast determination to improve patient care at every level has long motivated Memorial Hospital to introduce breakthrough medical technologies in communities along the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Thousands of Robotic Surgery Cases Completed

Memorial launched its robotic-assisted surgery program in 2010 with its first case using the Da Vinci system. This type of surgery allows the surgeon to perform minimally invasive procedures with precision and accuracy, resulting in fewer complications and reduced recovery time for the patient. Sensitive and detailed enough to peel the skin off a grape, the robotic arms of the device are guided by the surgeon throughout the procedure. Cameras on the device give the surgeon in-depth views of the surgery site and surrounding areas in ultra-high definition and magnification. Common procedures include colon and gallbladder removal as well as hernia repairs, hysterectomy, removal of ovaries and ovarian cysts, removal of the prostate, bladder, and kidney (total and partial), pelvic floor and kidney reconstruction.

Advantages include:

  • Fewer complications, such as surgical site infection
  • Less pain and blood loss
  • Quicker recovery
  • Smaller, less noticeable scars

Memorial has performed thousands of robotic assisted laparoscopic procedures since acquiring the system in 2010. In 2016, Memorial added another robotic assisted surgery system with the Xi, while continuing to upgrade the older model with the X system to remain at the cutting edge on the Gulf Coast.
