TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)
Memorial Hospital now offers new technology to treat carotid artery disease and help prevent stroke.
TransCarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR)
TCAR’s revolutionary method of unblocking the carotid artery greatly reduces the risk of plaque breaking loose from the artery wall and getting to the brain where it can cause a stroke. TCAR is not for all patients. However, with less postoperative pain and lower risk of cranial nerve injury, TCAR can benefit patients who may not be candidates for traditional open carotid surgery.
Carotid arteries transport blood to the brain and, like coronary arteries, can become blocked with dangerous plaque.
How TCAR Works to Prevent a Stroke
The surgeon makes a tiny incision at the base of the neck, inserts a catheter into the carotid artery, then clamps the artery. The unique TCAR instrument temporarily reroutes the blood to flow backward, away from the brain. This innovation prevents plaque debris from reaching the brain and causing a stroke.
Next, the surgeon places a stent to open the blocked artery, removes the catheter, and closes the incision. Following a short recovery, the patient can return to normal activity.
