Chief Nursing Officer
The Chief Nursing Officer is accountable directly to the President/CEO for the operation of assigned services as indicated on the organizational chart. The Chief Nursing Officer assumes leadership responsibility for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of clinically effective and efficient systems that assure quality patient care. The Chief Nursing Officer provides assistance, interpretation, guidance, and consultation to leaders and employees on clinical policies, guidelines, programs and practices, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Acts as an advocate for nursing staff, addressing their concerns, fostering a positive work environment, and promoting employee engagement. Serves as the nurse executive.
Essential duties
- Provides direction and leadership for nursing service.
- Coordinates development of patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients nursing care needs or patient-populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated and met.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of plans for providing nursing care to those patients requiring nursing care.
- Participates with governing body, management, medical staff, and clinical leaders in the organizations decision-making structures and processes.
- Assures an effective ongoing program to measure, assess, and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
- Promotes coordinated, interdisciplinary quality patient care.
- Systems/mechanisms established to provide for compliance with all provisions of JCAHO and other pertinent regulatory requirements.
- Promotes the use of systems to capture and manage patient care information through computerization, which promotes continuity of care, compliance with established standards of care and payer guidelines, health services, research and convenience.
- Supports clinical research initiatives, which yield improvements in care.
- Maintains systems to continuously monitor the quality, safety and appropriateness of care and services provided and supports multidisciplinary teams that assess, plan, and implement changes as required to achieve optimal outcomes.
- Maintains an environment supportive of positive customer relations/patient satisfaction.
- Maintains positive communication channels with patients, hospital staff, physicians and general public to enhance the continuum of care.
- Promotes a hospital culture conducive to maintaining excellent physician relationships in order to develop a collaborative practice environment between physicians and staff.
- Complaints handled promptly and courteously and without increased risk to Memorial.
- Monitors patient satisfaction measures and assures mechanisms in place to improve areas of need.
- Works collaboratively with the administrative team to manage the fiscal oversight of allocated resources in order to optimize return on investment in service initiatives.
- Participates in determining operational and capital budget allocation between service components of the organization to ensure desired outcomes.
- Realigns staff and other resources to respond to financial constraints without compromising the overall clinical effectiveness of care provided.
- Uses effective financial databases upon which comparative outcomes can be derived and reported.
- Provide leadership to department management teams to achieve business goals, quality outcomes and customer satisfaction.
- Provides assistance to team members to ensure excellent customer service.
- Successful completion of annual skills and competency requirements.
- Practices within legal, ethical and professional boundaries.
- Maintains expertise in the area.

Qualification and Education Requirements
- Required – Bachelor’s & Master’s Degree in Nursing, Hospital Administration or related field.
- Preferred – Certificate on Nursing Administration
License or Certification Requirements
- Required – Current MS RN license
