Chief Medical Officer

The Chief Medical Officer will provide leadership to employed, contracted, aligned medical staff and contracted medical directors. The CMO will work collaboratively with Administration on both a strategic and operational level to develop and oversee system objectives and services. The CMO will provide leadership and direction to assigned areas of responsibility. The CMO reports to the President & CEO.

Essential duties

Provides organizational strategy and oversight for all Providers

  • Provides a physician voice in organizational decision-making
  • Develops and maintains collegial relationships with physicians and clinical staff to promote engagement and quality patient care
  • Provides guidance and engages peer providers in initiatives to define and ensure effective delivery of medical services in compliance with local, state and federal law, The Joint Commission, and rules and regulations pertaining to the practice of medicine

Works collaboratively with Administration to develop and oversee system and objectives and services

  • Facilitates, intervenes and moderates provider-provider, provider-patient, provider-staff
    concerns in collaboration with other appropriate providers and hospital leadership
  • Advises Administration on clinical strategy development and recommends resolution to
    medical and administrative issues and problems
  • Works collaboratively with, and serves as primary liaison to, Chief Operating Officers to implement patient-focused and efficiency-based process improvement
  • Serves an organizational resource for CEP and medical directors
  • Leads committees to support clinical outcomes analysis and quality initiatives
  • Provides physician leadership and engages providers in development of patient care policies, protocols and procedures
  • Provides administrative leadership to the Medical Staff Services and Patient Safety/Risk
    Management functions
  • Ensures appointment and reappointment to the medical staff and allied health staff are
  • compliant with sound privileging practices
  • Works in collaboration with department directors to establish goals and performance
    measures
  • Monitors practice patterns, presents data analysis and interpretation, and initiates
    performance improvement activities
  • Serves as liaison and organization resource to the physician peer review process
  • Assists with screening and recommendation for (physician) applicants for employment

Participates as a member of the team to achieve business goals, quality outcomes and customer satisfaction

  • Participates on committees/councils and performance improvement activities as
    requested/required.
  • Successful completion of probation and annual skills/competency requirements

Qualification and Education Requirements

  • RequiredDoctoral degree – Medical degree with board certification, or board eligibility, in chosen field
  • Required – Current and non-restricted medical license
  • Required8 years experience – Clinical practice, with participation in leadership roles within the medical staff or other health system leadership roles
  • Preferred – Prior supervisory and management experience in a primary care setting or prior experience in a Chief Medical Officer role

and BOT decisions. Negotiate change and compromise with multiple levels of stakeholders across the organization.

Required education:

  • E2 – Bachelor’s or advanced degree

Required experience:

  • E2 – Years of relevant experience required: 12
  • Preferred minimum years of relevant experience: 15+

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is generally performed in a healthcare environment.

Physical Demands

No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job.
