Memorial Celebrates National Donate Life Month

For Immediate Release March 25, 2014

GULFPORT, Miss. — Memorial Hospital is celebrating National Donate Life Month with three opportunities for the community to help save lives:

April 2 – Register to be an organ donor.

The Mississippi Organ Recovery Agency (MORA) will be on-site at Memorial Hospital Wednesday, April 2, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., in the Main Atrium (located just off the Parking Garage) to promote the importance of organ and tissue donation and to register donors. A family whose lives were changed by an organ donation will also be available to share their story. Eligible donors must be Mississippi residents who are at least 18 years old. Please stop by the booth for more information or to enroll in the Mississippi Donor Registry. Donors may also register online at donatelifems.org.

April 22 – Give blood.

Help celebrate National Donate Life Month by participating in the American Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, April 22, 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. in the Memorial Medical Office Building Atrium. To make an appointment, visit www.redcrossblood.org and use the sponsor code memorialgport; or call Angie, 865-3422 or Laura, 867-5030. All blood types needed. Picture ID required. Walk-ins are welcome.

April 30 – Join the Bone Marrow Registry.

Be The Match® Foundation will hold a Bone Marrow Registry Drive Wednesday, April 30, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Main Atrium at Memorial Hospital (located just off the Parking Garage). A few simple cheek swabs (no needles) is all it takes to help others with life-threatening blood cancers-like leukemia and lymphoma—or other diseases! If you are between the ages of 18 and 44, joining the registry is free; if you are over the age of 44, a $100 fee will be required. To learn more, visit BeTheMatch.org or call Madonna Phillips, National Bone Marrow Donor Program, at (877) 601-1925, ext. 4350.
