Memorial Hospital Foundation Announces Burdonne Young Scholarship Winners

For Immediate Release June 4, 2013

The Memorial Hospital Foundation has announced this year’s winners of the Burdonne Young Scholarship. The scholarships are named in honor of the late Burdonne Young, former nurse for Memorial Hospital for over 50 years. These scholarships are awarded annually to dependents of Memorial employees enrolled as a full-time, undergraduate student at a college or university in the Fall of 2013 or are currently enrolled at a university.

This year, Memorial Hospital Foundation was able to select two additional candidates to receive the Burdonne Young Scholarship. This was made possible by Memorial employees who dedicated funds through the Foundation Employee Campaign to the Burdonne Young Scholarship Fund. Thank you to those who have made it possible for these six students to move forward in their education.

Scholarships in a healthcare related field were awarded to Morgan Appel, Kara Morrison, and Victoria Wilson.

Morgan Appel is the daughter of Julie Appel, Clinical Dietician. Morgan attended Gulfport High School where she attained a 4.0 GPA and scored a 27 on her ACT. She intends on attending Mississippi State University in the fall majoring in Biological Sciences. While at Gulfport High School, she was the Vice President of National Honor Society, a member of Health Occupation Students of America and a recipient of the prestigious Entering Freshmen Academic Excellence”
